Anarene

June 23 - July 22, 2023

Opening Reception: Thursday, June 22, 6 - 8 PM.

Chelsea, New York: 532 Gallery is pleased to announce Anarene, an exhibition of paintings curated by London-based artist Danny Rolph.

The title of this show is a reference to the ghost town in Texas where Peter Bogdanovich's 1971 film The Last Picture Show is set. This exhibition continues the thematic conversation of a previous show curated six years ago at the gallery called Last Picture Show. In this exhibition, the film's location, Anarene, is a metaphor for painting in that its purpose and power have changed, but nonetheless it continues vividly to live within the imagination of the present and therefore continues to retain a purpose?  The film is full of transgressions and is beautifully crafted; it’s loaded with narratives and characters who help create a particular mood.

The artists that 532 Gallery is proud to bring together span different generations and continents. They are all pioneers, rightfully respected by their peers and the public alike. By bringing examples of their work together in our gallery location for a period of time, we hope to explore and reveal the complexity and purpose of approaches in current painting and it’s ongoing vitality and breadth as a medium. Reveling in the present but acknowledging a debt to the past.

Participating artists: Per Adolfsen, Diana Copperwhite, Michaela Yearwood Dan, John Hoyland, Ian Hughes, Chantal Joffe, Mali Morris, Sinéad Ní Mhaonaigh, Chris Ofili, Michael Raedecker, Alberto A. Rodriguez, Danny Rolph, Alonso León Velarde.

Special thanks to the generosity of all the artists as well as the Marianne Boesky Gallery, Grimm Gallery, Hales Gallery, Victoria Miro Gallery, and David Zwirner Gallery.
