Henry Mandell

Henry Mandell’s paintings and drawings are focused on the exploration of experimental artistic practices, the human condition, scientific principles and their merging effect on our lives, pioneering unique approaches to creating abstract artworks..

All of the paintings began as stories, poems, or written data. Using digital tools, transforming line by line, letter by letter, the characters of selected source text into visually compelling abstract imagery. The first step in transforming what is known into the unknown, experimenting and painting without the use of iterative code. All creative decisions remain with the artist’s hand and mind, establishing Mandell’s wide visual vocabulary with digital painting.

Theory Of Mind study drawings

Henry Mandell’s paintings and drawings are products of his ongoing exploration of contemporary artistic practices, scientific principles, social concerns of the human condition and their merging effect on our lives.  Trained as a traditional painter and printmaker, Mandell uses analog and digital tools to create compelling abstract imagery.

The Theory Of Mind study drawings explore the basis of forms which evolve into larger digital paintings on the same theme, that of the development of the human mind.  The Theory Of Mind is a term from the field of psychology as an assessment of an individual human's degree of capacity for empathy and understanding of others.

The process begins in infancy and fully forms around age four.  Understanding “wanting”, understanding “thinking”, understanding that “seeing leads to knowing” and at the final stage understanding that others can have“false beliefs” and ‘hidden feelings” is a huge influence on a developing mind.  Given individual circumstances a person can be open and empathetic or closed and suspicious of others.
