Overview

José Angel Vincench was born in 1973, in Holguín, Cuba.  He completed his art studies in Havana's Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), and lives and works in Havana.

Vincench’s approach to conceptual art is shaped by themes central to Cuban social life, as well as his religious background and political perspective. His work often incorporates elements drawn from Afro-Cuban rituals, which he distills into forms of graphic simplicity. While Cuban and Caribbean art has traditionally been associated with spontaneity, emotion, and vibrant color, the political shifts of the 1980s prompted Cuban artists to focus more on the cognitive dimensions of art making rather than purely its aesthetic qualities. Within this context, artists such as Vincench turned increasingly introspective and critical, a trajectory that has defined his move toward a more minimalist and abstract style.
